Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ in Bethesda, Maryland is a progressive congregation rooted in the teachings of Jesus and aligned with a denomination of "firsts" and extravagant welcome.
The church seeks an Interim Music Director to serve in a temporary employment capacity from September 2 - December 12, 2025 during our Music Director’s sabbatical. The Interim Music Director will report to the Transition Minister or Senior Minister. (WCUCC is in a time of leadership transition and is currently interviewing candidates for the Senior Minister role.)
Duties
- Attend weekly staff meetings (Tuesdays 1:30 - 3:00 pm) in person or virtually.
- Perform duties and lead on Sundays: choir rehearsal (9:00 am); worship service (10:00 am).
- Run weekly Thursday evening choir rehearsals in preparation for Sundays (7:00 pm).
- Work with the Transition Minister or Senior Minister to curate music (picking songs that go with the worship themes) for Sunday services.
- Prepare instrumental works for the service on organ/piano and accompany choir on organ/piano as needed.
- Contribute to shared Google planning documents for weekly bulletin preparation on a defined weekly timeline.
- Work with section leaders to plan solo or small ensemble repertoire.
- Help find substitutes for section leaders.
- Communicate with the choir regularly to ensure efficient planning and organization.
- Be available as the music point person for organizing extra events, such as weddings & funerals. Other WCUCC ministerial staff will coordinate the services and staff efforts.
Details
Hours: About 20 hours per week. Any hours over 20 in any given week will need to be approved by the Transition or Senior Minister in advance.
Compensation: $30.00 per hour, plus all applicable overtime as required by law and subject to standard withholdings and deductions required by law. (W2, Non-exempt)
Benefits: None. Any sick leave will be unpaid.
