Not your typical minister, Rich (AKA Senior Pastor Rev.
Richard L. Smith) plays the guitar and banjo, gardens, trout-fishes,
and walks the C&O Canal pathways at every opportunity. In spite of
the fact that he graduated from the University of Redlands, CA, and
Berkeley’s Pacific School of Religion, this Phoenix native loves
bluegrass, the desert, and baseball. He’s an associate member of the
Jesus Seminar and an avid reader. After twenty-five years of ministry –
beginning in Tombstone, Arizona, with stints in Long Beach, CA and
Tucson, AZ – Mr. Smith came to Washington just a week before the
attacks of September 11, and has spent five fast and fulfilling years
at Westmoreland, exploring the East Coast and growing along with the
church into new ways of ministry in the 21st century. He is married,
has two grown children, and two mostly-well behaved dogs.
