We will discuss Last Orders by Graham Swift. Awarded the Booker Prize in 1996, this novel traces the relationships among a group of friends traveling together to carry out their friend’s “last orders”-scattering his ashes from a pier. In this framework-reminiscent of Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying-Swift explores love, guilt, loyalty, betrayal, friendship, and resentment before closing on a note of transcendent understanding.
