We will discuss The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse by Louise Erdrich. You could take a semester to unpack all of the wonders in this book! Father Damien Modeste, now more than 100 years old, is reflecting on a life that has included times spent as the musically passionate young nun Sister Cecilia and ex-nun Agnes DeWitt as well as nearly 80 years as the mission priest on the isolated reservation of Little No Horse. The author, herself a member of an Ojibwe (Chippewa) nation, beautifully integrates native American spirituality and supernaturalism into this portrait of Ojibwe society persisting through multiple difficulties, as seen through the eyes of a sympathetic though flawed Catholic missionary. If you haven't yet read any of Erdrich's books, let this be the first of many!
We meet in the church Parlor. We always serve snacks, and always welcome new members.
