The Assistant to Leaders in the Making will work in a team setting with professional staff by supporting LITM efforts to support youth as they become confident and contributing members of the community through workshop based activities. The Assistant will assist in participant recruitment, program planning and program implementation.
The motto for FLOC is “Education to Empower Young People-Closing the Advantage Gap.” This statement is suggestive of our goal-oriented education that not only empowers students, but moves them in the direction of closing the advantage gap that is so present in DC and in our nation. The volunteer would have the opportunity to work in a city that not only has one of the lowest graduation rates in the country, but they would have the opportunity to ensure that students are served with academic enrichment, tutoring, counseling, and scholarship support in the hopes to eventually break that advantage gap. Through our curriculum, we are constantly addressing the structural challenges within our city through proficient and respectable guest speakers, field trips and community service projects. As a result of the population we serve being generally labeled “at-risk,” the volunteer will be partnering and working with families who are suffering as a result of these social, economic, and political structures.
