Central American Resource Center (CARECEN)

CARECEN is located in the Mount Pleasant/Columbia Heights neighborhood in DC operates legal, educational, and empowerment programs/projects for, and in cooperation with the over 300,000 member Central American and Latino community in the metropolitan area.  CARECEN is a 501(c)3 community-based organization which also offers housing, citizenship and civic participation programs to the Central American/Latino community. It was established in 1981 to secure the rights of those Salvadorans and other Central Americans who fled from the wars, turmoil and human rights violations in their countries and to seek refuge in the United States.

Originally, CARECEN focused its efforts on providing legal services to Central Americans facing deportation and organizing to obtain amnesty for Central Americans refugees. Today CARECEN not only offers various legal services for members of the Central American community, but it also offers community support services and empowerment activities to the greater Latino community.  All these programs serve to promote the comprehensive development of the Washington's Central American/Latino community by responding to its changing needs as it develops roots in this country.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS: (2 positions)

Position 1) Bilingual Case Worker.  The incumbent reports to the Director of Programs. The incumbent would also be "a member of the legal team". Spanish fluency is required. The person will provide “walk in assistance and referrals" to clients, help draft letters requesting DC agency assistance in concert with the CARECEN attorneys, deal with wage, tax and court procedure issues, conduct educational workshops and forums, etc.  Spanish fluency is required.

Position 2) Citizenship and Civic Education Coordinator. The incumbent would plan and implement citizenship classes, including the ESL (English as Second Language) component, for 4 10 week sessions. He/she would also help with citizenship applications, advocacy and voter registration campaigns. Again, Spanish fluency is required.
