Executive Committee Minutes

March 25, 2008

Present: Sarah Wilson, Robert Benton, Dave Jacobs, Katy Mahaffey, Lorrie Lynch Meier, Marianne Phelps, Nancy Van Meter. 

Ex Officio: Rich Smith, Bob Maddox, Pete Davis, Will Irwin, Janet Moyer.

Absent:HeidiHartmann, Doug Jehl,

Prayer: Rev. Bob Maddox opened the meeting with prayer at 7:37 p.m.

 Resolved 08 Exec 05: Thanks to Janet Moyer and everyone who produced the excellent new “Guide to Our Church,” now in the pews.

 Motion 08 Exec 03:  To approve minutes of the February 28, 2008 meeting as corrected.

                                       Mahaffey/Meier  Passed Unanimously.

A. After Church Forum Coordinators

Motion 08 Exec 04:  Recruit one or two church members to be after church forum coordinators.  They will solicit speakers, schedule dates that fit in the church calendar, and publicize at least four programs a year.  Rev. Bob Maddox will represent the staff in the process and, together with Moderator Sarah Wilson, will get this going.

                                                Benton/Mahaffey  Passed Unanimously.

Potential speakers include:  Maryland State Secretary of Labor Tom Perez, Seth Waxman

 
Resolved 08 Exec 06:  Sunday board meetings should be discouraged to help ease
                                       calendar conflicts.

 
B.  Garth Newel Quartet --  It was agreed that adding this musical event to the Diana Butler Bass workshop weekend (November 1, 2008)  would be too much.  Ask Alejandro to work with the Arts Committee to set up a different event.

C.  Westmoreland Picnic on Earth Day Sunday, April 20th -- BCE will be responsible.
      To avoid conflict with after church activities, it should start no earlier than 1 p.m.

D.  Six Degrees of Separation Sunday
was tabled.

Resolved 08 Exec 07:  That we hold Wesmoreland’s 60th Anniversary Dinner on
                                       Palm Sunday, April 5, 2009.  Without objection.

 Membership Goals were discussed in detail without taking any action.

Membership Task Force will meet 11:30 a.m. Sunday, March 30th.

Janet Moyer reported we’ve had two Sundays in February with total attendance of 215.

Palm Sunday, March 16th, was attended by 215 also, 185 adults and 30 children.

 
Deacons requested boards and committees to forward comments about the length of our Sunday worship service. ญญญ

 
Motion 08 Exec 05:  To approve the membership of the following new members: John Parachinia and Margaret Fagg, who joined on January 27, 2008, and Jeannetta Black and Deb and Jack Grobe, who joined on March 16, 2008.

 
                                   Van Meter/Jacobs  Passed Unanimously.

 
Motion 08 Exec 06: 
To approve the removal from membership of Darla and Ken Lee.

 
                                    Van Meter/Wilson  Passed Unanimously.

 
Motion 08 Exec 07: 
To approve the resignation from the Board of Community Action of Kathy Ireland and her replacement by Carol Mabry. Jacobs/Wilson  Passed Unanimously.

 
Green Group Resolution
of three pages (attached) was introduced.  It was agreed that the Executive Committee would consider it by email during the following week.

                                                 Mahaffey/Wilson  Passed via email by March 31st.

 
Rev. Rich Smith
reported on his lunch with Conference Minister John Deckenback re the controversy surrounding Trinity UCC’s Minister Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

 
Prayer:  Rev. Rich Smith closed the meeting with prayer at 9:24 p.m.

 
Next meeting: 7:30 p.m. April 22.
