Board of Deacons
Minutes

April 21, 2008

Members present: Robert Benton (Co-Chair), Edrie Hough, Pete Davis, Bonnie Hetzel, Pamela Mertz, Jim Tyson

R. Benton opened the meeting with a prayer at 8:15 p.m.

Rich, who was attending for the first 20 minutes, announced that he will be preaching on “Servitude”  based on passages in Scripture (Acts 6  1-6, and  1st Timothy) during the Mission service.

Mission Moment May 4:
1.    Each board will have a Sunday. May 4 will be for Deacons who will illuminate our mission, connect parishioners to Deacons’ service during the “mission moment”.   
Deacons’ plan for May 4: Honor past Deacons, mission moment, celebrate roles of Deacons, stress that the only qualification for Deacons is to be a member of Westmoreland.

Length of Service:
2.    A few complaints about the length of the service, extending more than an hour, have been received. Deacons are sensitive to the concerns. Suggestions for controlling the length of service such as curtailing announcements were discussed. Maybe not a children’s sermon every Sunday. Rich will talk to Jessica. Pete will draw up some guidelines to circulate.
    
Bulletin:
3.    The Bulletin needs better proofing. Perhaps Helen Bebaut,  joining us from Briggs, will be in charge of proofing the bulletin.

Worship Coordinator & Worship Space & Music:
4.    Robert and Marianne are working on these issues.

5.    Discussion on “community cares”  involving an electronically updatable list for all those in need of care, prayers, rides, visits, contacts is needed. P. Davis is developing the excel program and will run it by Janet Moyer since one person will need to keep it organized and updated.    

After a closing prayer, the meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
