Outreach Through the Music and the Arts
The concert series began in 1973 and continues to present some of our area's finest musicians in performance. The concert series is dedicated to outreach. The offerings collected at the concerts are contributed to four charities. These currently are the Montgomery County Chapter of the National Association on Mental Illness, the Shaw Community Ministry, Marie Reed Learning Center, and Bethesda Cares. There is no charge for admission to the concerts.
The Music and Arts Committee also presents four art shows each year. Art show openings are celebrated after each concert with a reception open to all who attend the concert.
The September 2009 concert featured an organ recital by Charles Miller and art by Jan Rowland and Julie Miller
The November 2009 concert featured David Lonkevich, playing the flute, and Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez, Westmoreland’s Music Director, piano and harpsichord. The art shown in connection with this concert included works by Pamela Clifford and Katy Orme.
The Music and Arts Committee sponsored a sold out benefit Jazz Concert featuring Jazz singer and Chancel Choir member Lena Seikaly. The concert benefitted the Music and Arts Programs at Westmoreland the charities the concert series supports.
In February 2010 Westmorelanders and guests thoroughly enjoyed "Classical Comedy," a concert presented by soprano, Brooke Evers and pianist Grace Cho, benefitting the Marie Reed Learning Center.
In May 2010 the choirs and conductors from Westmoreland Congregational, Christ Congregational, Marvin Memorial United Methodist, and Woodside United Methodist performed a free concert of mid-twentieth century choral music for the benefit of Bethesda Cares..
